News of the TuDy project

  • 2016/10/03 : the geodynamo team welcomes Sylvie Su. This new graduate student will run the ZoRo experiment, under the supervision of Philippe Cardin.
  • 2016/10/29 : DTSΩ : we have completed the replacement of our 50L of ’old’ sodium by 50L of fresh sodium.
  • 2016/08/31 : ZoRo : the brass sphere is delivered (at last).
  • 2016/06/30 : we wish a nice retirement to our engineer Patrick La Rizza.
  • 2016/06/01 : the geodynamo team welcomes Anthony Astruc, a new mechanical engineer at ISTerre, who will contribute to the ZoRo experiment.
  • 2016/05/30 : the geodynamo team welcomes Dan Lathrop who joins the team for one week. We organize several round tables with Matthew and him (acoustics ; DTSΩ and BigSister results ; data assimilation for experiments).
  • 2016/05/17 : the geodynamo team welcomes Matthew Adams who is visiting us for 3 weeks. Matthew is from the University of Maryland. He works on the BigSister sodium experiment there, as well as on the modal acoustic velocimetry method that will be used for our ZoRo experiment.
  • 2016/04/27 : Guillaume Chedal and Eugénie Liot, from Métaux Spéciaux, visit our sodium installation to prepare a proposal for the replacement of our 50 liters of sodium. We think that this could solve our coupling problems.
  • 2016/04/21 : Patrick La Rizza installs the sleeve with its 9 magnetometers in DTSΩ. He also replaces a component in the DTSNUM electronics whose misbehaviour was inducing noise at one GMR band.
  • 2016/04/05 : a new DTSΩ campaign. We get a few very nice Doppler velocity profiles, but the coupling is not good at all times.
  • 2016/04/04 : we send to the ANR our 30-months report.
  • 2016/04/01 : we wish a nice retirement to our engineer Jean-Paul Masson.
  • 2016/03/31 : we brush the oxydes away from the inner sphere of DTSΩ.
  • 2016/03/15 : ISTerre/Institut Néel scientific day in memory of our colleague Denys Schmitt.
  • 2016/03/09 : we test a method to brush the oxydes away from the inner sphere.
  • 2016/03/07 : we initiate a weekly brainstorming meeting of the TuDy partners.
  • 2016/03/01 : we decide to check the appearance of the inner sphere, using an endoscope entered by one of the ports. The northern hemisphere of the inner sphere appears to be covered by a whitish oxyde deposit.
  • 2016/02/16 : we have carried out the processing of the high quality data of the DTSΩ July campaigns. The results are remarkable. They yield a quantitative assessment of the reduction of turbulent fluctuations provided by global rotation.
  • 2016/02/11 : a new DTSΩ campaign. The coupling is very poor again. Our analysis dismisses the two hypotheses we had envisionned...
  • 2016/01/01 : Elliot Kaplan starts a second year as a post-doc with TuDy.
  • 2015/12/16 : it turns out that there is a problem with our last DTSΩ campaign : the coupling bewteen sodium and the inner sphere was not good. The entrainment of the fluid was abnormally weak. We think of two possibilities : either the filling was incomplete, or our modifications to improve the ultrasound Doppler provoke some electric short-circuits. We will test these hypotheses in the next campaign.
  • 2015/11/05 : third campaign of fully equiped DTSΩ, with great ultrasound Doppler velocity results !. Our efforts to reduce the effect of electromagnetic noise, and the optimization of the DOP3010 parameters, have enabled us to obtain very valuable velocity profiles for a wide set of configurations (fo = 5, 7.5 and 10 Hz).
  • 2015/08/10 : it is with great sorrow that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend Denys Schmitt on this day.
  • 2015/07/08 : second campaign of fully equiped DTSΩ ! Rotation rate of the outer sphere : 10 Hz. Differential rotation rate : from -20 to +40 Hz. Successful test at a rotation rate of 15 Hz for the outer sphere.
  • 2015/07/01 : first campaign of fully equiped DTSΩ ! Rotation rate of the outer sphere : 5 Hz. Differential rotation rate : from -35 to +25 Hz.
  • 2015/06/01 : the geodynamo team welcomes Eric Gaidos, Professor at the University of Hawaii. Team-work on the dynamo scaling laws and the detection of magnetic fields of exoplanets.
  • 2015/05/19 : the DTSNUM embarked electronics is fully connected and operational.
  • 2015/05/07 : all electronic boxes are embarked on DTSΩ.
  • 2015/04/09 : the geodynamo team welcomes Théo Cordoliani, 2nd-year student of Ecole Centrale Nantes, for a 6-month internship on the acoustics of ZoRo.
  • 2015/04/03 : the new DTSNum mechanics is installed on DTSΩ.
  • 2016/04/01 : we send to the ANR our 18-months report.
  • 2015/03/20 : solar eclipse... : Henri-Claude Nataf presents a selection of highligths of the KITP program on Exoplanets he attended in Santa Barbara (USA).
  • 2015/03/12 : all magnetic stripes are now glued on the DTSΩ experiment.
  • 2015/02/05 : ’modal acoustic velocimetry’ runs on the DTS set-up filled with air to investigate the splitting of acoustic modes due to global rotation (up to 15 Hz).
  • 2015/01/13 : Adeline Richard and Henri-Claude Nataf fix the H4 heating element of DTS (second end).
  • 2015/01/01 : the geodynamo team welcomes Elliot Kaplan, who has been recruited as a post-doc thanks to the ANR grant. Within the TuDy project, Elliot will run numerical simulations to exploit experimental data from DTSΩ and to prepare and interpret the ZoRo experiment.
  • 2014/11/14 : presentation of the ZoRo experiment by Philippe Cardin.
  • 2014/11/13 : PhD defense of Simon Cabanes.
  • 2014/09/09 : the geodynamo team organizes a round-table discussion with visiting Prof. Peter Davidson (Cambridge University).
  • 2014/09/29 : Patrick La Rizza completes the calibration of the new magnetic stripes of DTSΩ (temperature and magnetic field).
  • 2014/09/23 : ’modal acoustic velocimetry’ tests on the DTS set-up filled with air.
  • 2014/07/21 : Nathanaël Schaeffer and Henri-Claude Nataf attend the ’Waves and turbulence in geophysical and astrophysical flows’ workshop in Cambridge.
  • 2014/07/17 : trial installation of the complete DTSNUM system on DTS, in presence of Dominique Grand from SERAS.
  • 2014/07/15 : Philippe Cardin and Henri-Claude Nataf add sodium in the DTSΩ storage tank.
  • 2014/06/30 : workshop in Leeds on the research topics of the geodynamo team and the group in Leeds.

  • 2014/01/20 : diffusion of the announcement of the TuDy post-doc opening position.
  • 2014/10/16 : first DTSΩ design assistance meeting with Dominique Grand from SERAS.
  • 2013/10/11 : the CNRS SERAS Service agrees to assist the geodynamo team for completing the DTSΩ design and for designing the ZoRo experiment.
